A Birth Story to Remember: Welcoming Baby Luke Samuel

There’s nothing quite like documenting the story of a baby’s arrival. Last week, I had the privilege of photographing the birth of baby Luke Samuel, born at 4:07 PM on October 2 — a calm, emotional, and unforgettable day that reminded me exactly why I love birth photography.

That morning, mama texted to say she’d been admitted and induced. I packed up my gear and headed to the hospital for an early check-in — not just to capture a few preliminary photos, but to make sure everything was in place with security so I could move freely when it was go-time.

The room was peaceful and full of anticipation. We shared quiet conversation before more visitors arrived, soaking in those rare, still moments before a new life changes everything. On my way out, we ran into her mother in the hallway — both of us smiling, knowing that the countdown had begun.

Back home, my husband Glynn and I had a quick lunch and some downtime before what we knew could be a long day. While we waited for updates, I worked on finishing a gallery for the November issue of Stroll Jefferson Place Bocage — another storytelling project I’m proud to be part of.

Then at 2:55 PM, my phone pinged. I thought it was a client checking in about her gallery, but instead it was mama — she’d jumped from 3 cm to 5 cm and it was officially go time!

We grabbed our gear and headed straight back to the hospital. When we arrived, mama was calm and steady, insisting it might still be a while — but I could tell things were moving fast. Her three older children stopped by after school for a few photos before the new baby arrived, filling the room with laughter and love.

Soon after, everything shifted. Mama began to feel nauseated, her blood pressure spiked, and baby’s heart rate dropped. The medical team acted quickly, and the room cleared. When I stepped back in just moments later, she was at 10 cm — and before we knew it, baby Luke Samuel was here.

Healthy. Beautiful. Perfect.

After a few quiet moments of skin-to-skin and deep breaths, the whole family came back in to meet their new baby brother. The older siblings even had their own mini gender reveal right there in the delivery room — cake balls and all. It was real, emotional, and so full of joy.

This family also happens to be dear friends of ours, which made the entire experience even more special. Watching them welcome their fourth child, surrounded by love, reminded me that birth photography is about so much more than images — it’s about preserving the emotion, connection, and authenticity of the moment.

Every birth story I document is unique, but the heart of it is always the same — real life unfolding in the most beautiful way possible.

I’m endlessly grateful to the families who invite us into these sacred spaces. A birth story is, after all, a documentary — the first chapter of a new life, told through timeless, emotive imagery.
