The photo above is of my husband and me the day we eloped! It was not the 1st time for either of us (it happens). So, we cared more about the marriage than the wedding. We debated a few options, micro-wedding for 25 people, a friend's house, parent's backyard, etc.... At the end of the day, it was him, me, our 2 best friends as witnesses and a local notary who turned out to be the most wonderful reverend and officiant. We eloped beneath an oak tree at a nearby arboretum at 11AM on the Thursday before Easter. After our service, that lasted about 15 minutes, we took our 2 witnesses and a couple of other friends to lunch at my favorite restaurant to celebrate.
We told the rest of our family and friends later that day and over the course of Easter weekend. The people who cherish you want what's best for you not them. So, if a big wedding sends you into palpitations like it did for me, consider eloping.
While, a big, beautiful wedding can create wonderful memories, it’s the daily efforts, mutual respect, and shared goals that sustain a marriage. Marriage is about weathering life's ups and downs together, growing as individuals and as a couple, and building a future based on love and understanding. While weddings are exciting, they are just the beginning—the true beauty lies in the journey that follows.

How to elope: A simple guide

1. Choose Your Destination
Decide whether you want a courthouse ceremony, a scenic outdoor elopement, or a destination adventure. Consider legal requirements if you're traveling abroad.
2. Handle the Legal Details
Research marriage license requirements in your chosen location, including waiting periods, officiant rules, and witness needs.
3. Plan the Ceremony
Decide if you want a simple vow exchange or something more personalized. You can hire an officiant or have a friend ordained to marry you.
4. Hire a Photographer (Optional but Recommended!)
Even if it’s just the two of you, capturing the moment is important. A photographer can document your special day for memories and to share with loved ones later.
5. Choose Your Attire
Whether it’s a wedding dress and suit or something casual, wear what makes you feel amazing.
6. Make Travel & Accommodation Plans
If you're eloping in a special location, book flights, hotels, and transportation in advance.
7. Tell Your Loved Ones (or Don’t!)
Some couples keep their elopement a secret until after, while others share their plans beforehand. Do what feels right for you.
8. Celebrate!
After saying "I do," take time to enjoy your new chapter—whether that’s a romantic dinner, a honeymoon adventure, or simply soaking in the moment together.
